Treating Motorcycle Accident Injuries

If you were injured in a motorcycle accident, you should seek medical care right away. If you wait too long, you may seriously endanger your health. You may also reduce your chances of being able to prove that your injuries were caused by the accident.

At the Reinecke Law Firm, we offer a free initial consultation to answer your questions about medical care. With offices in Santa Ana, San Diego and Los Angeles, we represent motorcycle accident victims throughout Southern California.

Follow Up on Medical Treatment

As the victim of a motorcycle accident, you were most likely transported by ambulance to a hospital emergency room. The emergency room physicians quickly diagnosed your most serious injuries and gave the treatment they considered medically necessary. Afterwards, the doctors determined whether you were facing a life-threatening condition and may have admitted you to the hospital ICU for further emergency medical care.

If you did not have life-threatening injuries, the emergency physician might have discharged you with an appropriate referral for follow-up care with your primary care physician. You might have been given pain medication, anti-inflammatory medicine and perhaps a prosthetic device such as a soft cervical collar, leg splint, or arm splint to help alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by your injuries. The ER doctor may also have referred you to a physical therapist or prescribe a conservative course of treatment, including pain medication.

As the victim of a motorcycle accident, it's important that you follow up with your primary care physician, referred doctor, or other healthcare professional for prescribed and recommended medical examinations and follow-up care. As time passes, the insurance company considers the causation between accident and injuries to be more remote.

Talk to Your Primary Care Physician

During your initial visit with your primary care physician or any other doctor to whom you're referred, tell the doctor ALL the details of how the injury occurred, including exactly how your body hit the pavement and what parts of your body are injured. At this time, you should provide the doctor with a laundry list from head to toe of all parts of your body that hurt, whether the injuries are major or minor. You may also be asked to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10.

Make sure the doctor requests and receives your emergency room records and X-rays to avoid duplicative X-ray charges. Your primary care physician will then perform a full examination and provide the appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. This may include a conservative course of physical therapy, prescriptive anti-inflammatory pain medication, or other medically necessary care.

Remember, any delay in seeking delay in seeking medical treatment for your motorcycle injuries may reduce your chances of being able to prove that the injuries were caused by the accident.
